Date released: 20 September 2007
Rookesbury Park School, this week unveiled a new artificial cricket wicket - part funded by a grant of £5,000 from the MCC Foundation.
The school, in Wickham, near Fareham, christened the new artificial wicket which will help develop the next generation of talent. The £6,800 cost was part funded by a grant of £5,000 from the MCC Foundation, with the remainder of the money raised by the 'Friends of Rookesbury Park School' and a donation from the Cricket Society. This facility will enable children aged 5 to 13 to learn and play cricket. Rookesbury Park is also making the artificial wicket available to other local schools with plans to have teams playing both against and with their own pupils.Head Mistress, Pippa Harris-Burland said, "Thanks to this grant from the MCC Foundation we now have our fabulous new all weather wicket in place. We
can raise the profile of cricket at Rookesbury Park School, as well as opening our doors to the wider community.
"In this way we are encouraging communication, teamwork and great fun – and that’s what children and sport put together is all about!"One of the aims of the MCC Foundation – a charitable organisation that receives donations from Marylebone Cricket Club - is to assist in the provision of facilities which will enable and encourage children to play cricket at clubs, schools and universities or other educational establishments in any part of the world.Among MCC's existing initiatives for encouraging youth cricket is the MCC Spirit of Cricket Challenge which, during the 2007 season, was responsible for introducing over 10,000 primary schoolchildren to the game, and which has previously been nominated for the 'Best Grassroots Initiative' at the Sport Industry awards.  back to list
